Visa Options for Parents
Choose the right visa type depending on how long you plan to stay.
| Visa Type | Duration | Work Rights | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guardian Visa (student guardian) | Matched to child's student visa (typically 1–2 years, renewable) | No work rights — full-time care of child only | Parents staying long-term alongside a child in NZ for their entire study period |
| Visitor Visa | Up to 9 months per visit (multiple entry available) | No work rights | Parents visiting for a shorter period — to settle child in, attend school events, or check in |
| NZeTA (visa waiver countries) | Up to 3 months per visit | No work rights | Short visits to NZ for citizens of visa-waiver countries (e.g. Taiwan, Singapore, UK, USA) |
💡 Taiwan passport holders can visit NZ for up to 3 months on NZeTA without a visa. For longer stays, a Visitor Visa or Guardian Visa is required.
Guardian Visa Requirements
To apply for a Guardian Visa, you must meet all of the following.
👧
Child's Student Visa
Your child must hold a valid New Zealand student visa for a course of 2 or more years.
👨👩👧
Named as Guardian
You must be named on your child's student visa application as the accompanying guardian.
💰
Financial Support
You must demonstrate sufficient funds to support yourself and your child during the stay. Approximately NZD $1,000+ per month.
🏥
Health Insurance
Comprehensive medical insurance is required for the full duration of the Guardian Visa.
📋
Good Character
Police certificate may be required depending on your country of residence history.
🚫
No Other Children in NZ
Guardian Visa is issued to care for the specific child named. You cannot use it to care for multiple children.
⚠️ The Guardian Visa does not allow you to work in New Zealand. If you work without authorisation, both your visa and your child's student visa can be affected.
Application Process
Step-by-step guide to applying for a Guardian Visa.
| Step | Action | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Your child applies for their student visa and lists you as accompanying guardian on the application | This must be done together — the guardian cannot be added after the student visa is granted |
| 2 | Gather required documents: passport, birth certificate (showing relationship), financial evidence, health insurance, police certificate | All documents may need to be translated into English by a certified translator |
| 3 | Submit Guardian Visa application online via Immigration NZ (immigration.govt.nz) | Pay NZD $480 application fee. Processing takes 4–8 weeks on average |
| 4 | Attend a biometrics appointment if required (fingerprints and photo) | Required for most applicants — check INZ instructions specific to your nationality |
| 5 | Receive visa grant. Visa will be matched to your child's student visa expiry date | You can apply to renew the Guardian Visa if your child's student visa is extended |
Guardian Visa vs Visitor Visa
Understanding the key differences between the two options.

Practical Tips for Accompanying Parents
Advice for parents planning to accompany their child to New Zealand.
📅
Apply early — processing takes time
Guardian Visa processing typically takes 4–8 weeks. Apply at the same time as your child's student visa to avoid delays.
🏥
Get comprehensive health insurance
Parents on Guardian Visas are not covered by ACC for work-related injuries, and are not eligible for public healthcare. A comprehensive policy is essential.
🏠
Plan your accommodation
Some families rent an apartment together. Homestay arrangements are for the student only — parents need separate accommodation.
💳
Budget for living costs
Life in NZ is expensive. Budget at least NZD $2,000–$3,000/month per adult for rent, food, transport, and activities.
📚
You can study part-time
Guardian Visa holders can study up to 3 months per year without a student visa. This is a great way to improve your English.
🌟
Build your own community
Many NZ cities have active parent groups for international families. Connecting with other parents makes the experience much richer for everyone.
